| San Francisco | Arriving late Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 06:19 AM UTC
Hello to all,
Will be arriving SFO around 8.30pm on a Friday night in June. Our hotel is in 1075 Sutter Street. What's the best option to get there from the international airport? Also, please recommend any interesting things to do nearby on a Friday night and if any good restaurants be opened til late? Many thanks Sybil |

You can do it by BART to VanNess station and then take the SF Muni Bus 47 or 49 along VanNess Ave to Sutter and walk two blocks east. You could also take BART to VanNess station and then take a cab from there, that would not be too expensive. If you have a lot of luggage then you might want to consider taking a Super Shuttle (shared ride van) from the Airport which will take you right to the door. Once you get settled in you can walk to Polk Street or VanNess, you will find many restaurants in those areas, or you can walk East to Powell street, a 10/15 minute walk and find many restarurants to choose from.

Dear Sybil,
BART is a good cheap option to get to town, but it will take a while. The trains don't run frequently at night. You might want to take SuperShuttle, if it's only you, or splurge on a cab. I think a cab will run you about $35-$45, but it's the fastest option. SuperShuttle is $17 each, so if you are 2 or more a cab is barely more expensive (unless you hit traffic, which you shouldn't at that hour. There aren't a lot of restaurants that are open late in that area. If you want a place you can walk to, there's Tommy's Joynt, at Van Ness and Geary. It's a little funky, and the food isn't gourmet, but it's cheap and charming. For burgers there's the Grubstake on Pine, just a couple of blocks away from your hotel. If you're willing to take a cab, Oola, on Folsom is one of the few upscale restaurants in town that is open late - it's very good. Yuet Lee, on Broadway and Stockton (near North Beach) is open late and is cheap and great (the lighting is special - very florescent). There are also several restaurants on Colombus in North Beach that are open late, if you want Italian food. North Beach is full of party-ers on weekends. So is the Mission district (there are late-night restaurants in the Mission also). Grab a Guardian or SF Weekly in your hotel lobby and check out the club listings. Acprincess

I would take the SuperShuttle. It's convient and moderately cheap. I have a car in San Francisco and still use this company everytime I need to go or be picked up from SFO. The price is about $16 first person and $10 each additional person. They help with your bags and drop you off RIGHT at your destination's entrance. You can make reservations online or ask for their location at SFO and wait for the next shuttle. Ask anyone at the airport for directions (their by the taxi's and buses), SuperShuttle is the most widely used shuttle service.

Osha Thai is my favorite Thai restaurant in San Francisco and it's open late. It's only 2-3 blocks away from your hotel. It's on the corner of Geary Street and Leavenworth Street. Cheap too!

Sorry one more recommendation...Lahore Kahari is a good Indian restaurant that is also open late and not too far from you. It's located in a ghetto part of the city, but I would'nt be worried about being mugged because there is a lot of car traffic. I've never had any close encounters anyways. It's on the corner of Leavenworth Street and OFarrell Street.

Thanks a lot for all the advice! Seems like the supershuttle is a not bad option! One more question, where would be a good place for a cheap and healthy breakfast nearby?

There isn't many restaurants in your area walking distance, it's not the best part of town. Marina District, Russian Hill, and Union Square/Nob Hill have some good choices for healthy breakfasts. You will have to take the muni or taxi. www.yelp.com is what almost every San Franciscan uses, you can trust their reviews.
