The Cost Road is a good option. Gaeta and Terracina are nice towns, they won't be too crowded in september.
From Terracina, you may reach Rome by the interior (Colli Albani, Castel Gandolfo).
Terracina or Gaeta are good places to stop.

i went to takeoffitaly.com. the author has prepared a long list of drive times between cities; he has Rome-Naples in 2hr 20, and Naples-Sorrento in 1hr. I've never driven from Rome to Naples. But in 2007, upon arrival in Naples, I drove to Positano via Sorrento, but I regretted it, as the highway de-evolves into a
1 lane belly-crawl in Sorrento! upon leaving Positano to Naples, I drove thru Salerno and made much better time and connections (under 2 hours).
