Province of Saskatchewan Hiking, fishing, photography around (4 hours drive) Saskatoon
Posted: Sun May 11, 2008 06:23 PM UTC
Hi,

I am in Saskatoon for 2 month and I don't want to hang around all the time in the city. So do you have any suggestions where I should go for fishing and hiking ? Planed to hire a car (Do you know a good one in town?) to drive around. Because of my work here I think a drive up to 4 hours would be ok for me.

thanks.

I recommend visiting 'Buffalo Pound Provincial Park', south east of Saskatoon.

happy travels

Wanuskewin Heritage Park would make for an interesting afternoon. It is only a few miles outside of the city. Here's the link:

Buffalo Pound Prov Park is 40 km east of Moose Jaw; there are lots of other parks that are closer to Saskatoon than that; Pike Lake and Blackstrap are quite close to Saskatoon, The Battlefords is north of North Battleford and would have plenty of activities to keep you occupied for a day. Fort Carlton Prov Park is about an hour's drive from Saskatoon and is a restored trading fort. Here's a link to all of the province's provincial parks:

And for the days when you don't feel like driving outside the city, Meewasin Valley Trail is right in the city of Saskatoon and offers about 20 km of trails along the riverbanks.

This link will give you plenty of information on activities that are available in and around Saskatoon:

As far as a car hire company, Enterprise is always my rental company of choice. They will pick you up, plus they usually offer free mileage on rentals if you are not leaving the province.

No info on page. Where are you from? Have you ever visited the Canadian shield? You might want to consider a weekend in Waskesiu. Too far for a day trip but good for a long weekend.

Totally agree with oldguy's suggestion of Waskesieu. It is a fabulous park, very beautiful there. We camped there for a week once, and loved listening to the wolves howling on the other side of the lake late at night. It's a great place to go to see wildlife. We saw several moose, and even had 2 bear cubs run through our campsite one day.
