| Helsinki | Youth hostel & ship company Posted: Sun May 11, 2008 03:06 PM UTC
Hello,
I will arrive in Helsinki on 15 July in the morning by plane. Would you suggest a nice youth hostel close to the town and which ship company is safe and convenient to Tallin in Estonia? Best wishes from Hong Kong Edith |

I stayed at Academica. It's very well located: 5-10 min walk to the center (ie, train station) and 3 min walk to the beach (thats a nice part to see). The old part of the hostel looks a bit creepy but they also have renovated rooms that are great, and clean. Both old and renovated rooms have a small kitchen and toilet in the room. If you decide to book in this hostel make sure you book a renovated room.
You probably know about this but it barely gets dark at night in July in Helsinki. my room didnt have curtains, so the light outside was getting in the room through the windows. That wasn't a problem in my case, but you may want to buy one of these masks About Tallin, there are ferries everyday. You do not need to book in advance, even in high season. so you can wait to be there, go to the harbour and then decide which one has better prices/schedules. enjoy helsinki :)

Ferry connection between Helsinki and Tallinn is very frequent indeed. LindaLine is usually the cheapest, but are operating only one catamaran at the moment. Tallink is the biggest, operating two big ferries and two smaller fast ferries. Viking Line is operating one brand-new fast ferry and is rather cheap, compared to for example SuperSeaCat or Nordic Jet Line which both operate 2 smaller fast boats. So you have plenty of choice! Boats depart from different terminals of Port of Helsinki, but they are close to each other.

Hi Edith!
I've stayed at Eurohostel (www.eurohostel.fi) a few times in years past. It is out at Katajanokka, which is a little walk past the Russian Orthodox church, but I've been very happy with their rooms. They are clean and comfortable, and I like the morning sauna :) Oh yes, and it is very light at night during summer here. I just bought myself a comfort blindfold because where I live farther up north it doesn't really get dark at all now. I sleep like a log now :) Have a good trip!
