Australia and Oceania How to get overland from PNG to Australia

I'm travelling from South East Asia to Australia overland and was wondering if there are any ferries from Popua New Guinea to Northern Australia through the torres straight islands. i have an australian passport tho It seems like there are no boat connection between PNG and OZ.
ive heard papua new guineans can get to the northern torres straight islands with a permit,but not sure if travellers can

It would be difficult to travel "overland" from SE Asia to PNG and then to Australia, as there are some major bodies of water in between. In my experience (having lived in PNG for a year) there are no ferries to northern Australia. You generally have to fly from Port Moresby to Cairns. The Torres Strait Islands are fairly closed off to visitors (permits required), so unless something has changed recently, you'd need to do some research on this. Maybe some of our local Aussie VTers can help out, if they have further knowledge.

I know of no ferry service in fact I suspect it would not have any significant traffic as few PNGs are genuine tourists. Flying to Cairns seems the only logical way.
