| Frankfurt am Main | US to Frankfurt, then Frankfurt Lufthansa to Krakow ... weight & other questions Posted: Sun May 11, 2008 04:28 AM UTC
I will be flying to Frankfurt on a US airline, then will be taking Lufthansa to Frankfurt - this means I arrive in Terminal 2 and need to get to Terminal 1.
- Does this mean I will need to clear customs, then come back thru security to board the Lufthansa flight, or according to the Lufth. airport map, is there a shuttle from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 that will stay inside security? - The limit for hand luggage is 8 kg, a little over 17 lbs. Does this only include the bag, but not any purse/small backpack, or is the total weight added? - I will bring my bag which will exceed 17 lbs, so assuming I will need to check most of it, I will bring a duffel bag to remove some of the non-essential items (but needed) items and check them. So, ***if*** I do not have to go back thru the Lufthansa ticket counter (only the gate) - will they gate check the duffel bag at the gate? Thanks! |

We flew Canada to Frankfurt on Lufthansa, then Lufthansa to Florence. What happens is you get off your flight on arrival, then you go through customs ( don't line up in the wrong line up like we did! Look above and make sure you are in the non EU line up. We did not go through security again as I recall.
We did not take a shuttle to our connecting flight so I can't help you there. They did not weigh our carry ons at all, going to Europe or coming home. Hope this helps

I haven't yet flown through Frankfurt but, generally, terminal buildings in Europe are separate. Clicking on 'terminal maps' on the left of this page:
http://www.airportcity-frankfurt.com/cms/default/r seems to show that you will need to go through immigration/customs to get to the shuttle bus from T1. I can't get the Lufthansa map to open, so don't know if they provide special 'airside' shuttles: if they do, then you won't have to go through customs/security. If they don't, you will. The Lufthamsa baggage page makes it quite clear what you can take as carry-on baggage: http://www.lufthansa.com/online/portal/lh/uk/info_ A (small) handbag is acceptable; the weight limit applies to the one pice of carry-on baggage. I have seen such baggage weighed on occasion, so be sure yours is ok (it will count as excess if it's too heavy, and that will cost you!). Make sure you have the liquids-in-a-plastic-bag rule right.

It's opened now, and seems to indicate that you will indeed be 'landside' during transit between terminals.

Hand luggage usually is not weighed, unless it looks like it's a lot over the 8 kg. Another thing to be aware of: Any duty free item you may have bought in the US has to be in the checked-in luggage or it will be taken from you when you change flights within the EU.

Thank you madamx, leics, christine !
I had seen all the Lufthansa and Frankfurt links (actually Lufthansa's graphics of the airport were the best!) - Mostly what I needed to know was wether they would gate check the luggage. I plan to take an empty duffle bag so I can "lighten up" my carry on and just check the extras. I was also curious wether they do or don't enforce it. Also we have the same liquids rules here, so I'm used to that part but thanks for the reminder. I will go to any lengths not to have to check my luggage, so when I do I try to only make it a minimal amount that I need to check. Thanks again ... and see some of you in Karlsruhe!
