I know plants need light, but...

How long do you think a big yucca plant could go without daylight? I'm guessing not too long, but how long is not too long?

I love this particular plant, but I don't think we can move it inter-island except via a shipping container with the rest of our stuff. It is likely to be more than a few days between the container reaching it's destination and us getting there to extract the poor plant.

Wouldn't it get banged around in a shipping container? Maybe it would be better off to stay behind in another lovingn home?

ask the plant

i will tell you if it can cope, if it wants to take the risk

I asked. I think it wants to come.

No, it wouldn't get banged around - it would be very secure, and gently wrapped leaf-wise. It's purely the lack of daylight and how long it could cope with NO daylight that concerns me.

if it wants to come let it take the risk

in my experience a plant can cope with quite a lot - if it is well established

it will need pampering as soon as you can get to it though

a week should be fine - but if it dies - well ... not taking any blame

I'm going to trial run fitting it in the back of my car - but there's already a beautifully established rubber plant an lord only knows what else to fit, and it's not a big car. It's a big yucca.

No problem. Yucca can take up to 4 weeks inside without much light, so unless you are paddling inter-island on a slow boat, your yucca will survive. Don't water it before hand, as to not stimulate growth. FYI, take a look at your neighbor in Australia, Collectors Corner,a good source of info. See website: http://www.collectorscorner.com.au/Plants/Yucca%20info.htm

A Yucca, being a succulent can survive for an extended period without light and also without mositure. Send it enclosed and only lightly moisten the soil. Since it will be enclosed it will need less moisture also. A trip of a few weeks should be NO problem.
We also have a Yucca in our front yard, but it is about 5 meters high, would be very difficult to package...

This seems to address the problem of what plant I can put in a permanently shady part of the dining area - the room has western exposure but is shaded by the trees outside and the only area I can fit a plant is in the darkest corner - a Yucca it will be!

They're really hardy, I have recieved them in plastic bags And the only yhat didnt survive transplant had moist soil on the feeder roots which caused rot. I had some in a sack that were dry as a bone that I forgot about for over a month and they did fine.

I agree, keep it's feet dry. Try to limit the amount it exercises so it won't sweat in the box. It might feel temporarily disoriented from sensory deprivation for a time but other than that there should be limited long-term trauma involved in it's adjustment. Just keep an eye on it for erratic behavior once it's in its new home. Isn't there a Bach remedy you could give it?

You might have needed the Rescue Remedy yourself if the family was broken up. Happy you've resolved the issue. You will have to keep us informed how things go. No doubt we will all have it in our prayers. Enjoy the new home!

I hope not - it would be mother-in-law's sofa. It isn't a house trained yucca either.
