| New York City | Thank you Virtual Tourist! Posted: Sat May 10, 2008 05:25 PM UTC
I've just returned from New York City after a wonderful vacation. Thank you so much for all your suggestions, guys! They were really helpful and allowed me to save time and money.
So, what about New York? Here's a brief summary of my trip: What's hot and what's not. WHAT'S HOT: a) Brooklyn The most charming borough in New York. b) Tom's Restaurant (Brooklyn) An American institution and the best breakfast in the city. c) Chabad City Walks Brooklyn, once again. Discover one of America's most fascinating and vibrant Jewish communities. d) Strand Amazing prices and the best book shop in the world. e) Broadway f) Angelika Movie Theater Fine selection of independent films from around the world. g) Forbidden Planet For a nerd like me, it's paradise! WHAT'S NOT: a) Central Park Hostel It's safe, cheap (40$ a night!), clean and wonderfully located (the subway and Central Park are only two steps away), but I'm too old to be sleeping in a 10 bed dorm full of strangers. If you're young and adventurous, go ahead and give it a try, but take the necessary precautions (v.g.use a locker and always carry your valuables with you). b) The Dugout (Christopher Street) Worst bar in New York. The bartender was a horrible fat guy with no manners. c) Katz's The decoration was impressive, but the famous Pastrami sandwiches were only ok. |

Sounds as though you had a very good time and have lots of tips for others.
Such a pity, though, that by posting them among the questions on the Forum they will soon disappear from view and so will be of no benefit to others planning a trip to NYC. Are you going to create a NYC page and post your tips there? That way they will remain for all to see - I do hope you do! Cheers.

Good idea, I'll do just that.

Just proves what I always say, New York has something for everyone.
In Katz Deli I had the cheesecake which was memorable, sounds like a good choice?

At Katz's Deli, I only had a pastrami sandwich and a Dr Brown's cream soda. If you like cheesecake, I strongly suggest the Majestic Delicatessen, 200 W 50th Street.

I live in NYC. I'm taken aback by your remark about Katz's. I think the decoration is drab and 1940's, and deliberately so, but the pastrami is above average, and a good value. who can account for taste?! glad you enjoyed NYC.

Sorry you had a bad experience in the Dugout. Don't know your tastes, but in case you didn't know, the Dugout is a gay bar. It's mainly a haunt for "bears" (big, hairy guys). But, all are usually welcome.

Gay or straight, they should always welcome their customers. I asked him the name of the beer and the fat African bartender just kept saying 'three dollars, three dollars'. Unbelievably rude!
(Maybe I didn't ask the right way, I think Americans don't just say 'I'll have a beer', they always specify the brand, but that's no excuse for his behavior, of course). Anyway, it was a minor incident. My stay was wonderful and I loved New York.
