I am not aware about your budget, but I can recommend Goan Heritage at Calangute Beach. Very close to Baga and is also a very neat & clean beach. The hotel is on the beach itself and you have to just go through the back gate to be on the beach.
Have fun

No reason to use Baga as a base...consider the Capital Panjim, various hotels, but the Panjim Inn is nice! Others to consider are Pousada Tauman and Nilaya Heritage...

I would not have thought that Baga is the best place for someone not interested in beaches to stay. It is a busy beach resort. Maybe think of what Blu has advised and stay in Panjim - a great little city.
I always think it is a pity that many of the Brits who visit Goa stick entirely to the beaches. Go inland. Rural Goa is fascinating. We usually hire a motorbike and amble round the countryside. It is peaceful and interesting. Get a map and head off in any direction. Make a point of crossing the rivers on the flat bottom ferries (although more and more bridges are opening now). Visit the temples and churches. Old Goa is certainly worth a day out and is very near to Panjim. Hope you have a good stay. Val
