Any suggestions on renting a car or SUV for 2 weeks this July? I'd like to get a SUV /large car / minivan for 4 people for our 2 week stay. Part of the 2 weeks will be spent visiting relatives in Soldotna. Searching the typical car rental agencies, I find their prices to be quite high, although this may be normal for Alaska in the summer! Any suggestions on where I can find the best deal would be greatly appreciated. Is it better to avoid picking up and dropping off at the airport? Should we take a taxi to another location away from the airport to pick up a car? Thanks to all who respond!

To save money you definitely want to rent away from the airport. The Spenard area is close and the money you spend on a taxi will be minor compared to your savings. My only other advice is to book now. If you wait there won't be a car at a reasonable price anywhere in the state!
