| Prague | Prague - ATMOSPHERE - Football Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 06:22 PM UTC
Hello
We are visiting Prague from June 11th for a few days. On the 11th June Czech's play Portugal in the Euro Football Championships. We are looking at watching the game and wanted to enjoy/experience some local but safe atmosphere. Can anybody suggest a good place to view the match where we may experience a good night with the locals cheering on the Czech National Team. Appreciate your help. Regards Gary |

Hi Gary, I guess the defeatist attitude is to head for the Irish bars and the most popular of these is probably Rocky O’Reillys on Stepanska just a two minute walk from Wenceslas Square. Here’s their website www.rockyoreillys.cz . If you want something a bit more Czech then also off Wenceslas Square is a street called Ve Smeckach, if you go up there, past the “Gentlemen’s cabaret clubs” there are two or three sports bars. I can’t remember the names but I recall watching the 2004 FA Cup final between Man U and Millwall in one of them and the atmosphere was pretty good.
There was also an English type pub called the John Bull on Senovazna. I think it’s been renamed the Koala or something like that but has retained it’s sporting theme. We also went to an interesting Irish/Cuban bar amusingly called O’Che’s Cuban Bar which would probably also be showing the game, it’s on Liliova. Around the Old Town Square is Caffreys Irish Bar and also the George & Dragon which will almost definitely be full of Brits. Have a good trip Cheers Clive

Yep Rocky O'Rielly's gets my vote too and whilst it is usually very much a multi-national crowd it is also pretty atmospheric and should be a good night.

Thanks both of you for your comments.
I do want to try and avoid the Irish bars and BRITS if I'm honest as we know what that can be like so a Czech bar is more ideal. However, I may try out Rocky O'Rielly's as you both suggest. At least you know it will be a good night with the Irish involved. Thanks again. Gary

If you want good local atmosphere you need to get away from old town, Wenceslas Square, and ohter parts of tourist central. Most Czechs stay away from these overpriced glittery places. Try the neighborhoods around most any Metro subway station. Most are safe. Just remember that 'pivo' is the word for beer. You might even try one of the suburbs like Radotin or Cernosice. Try some Czech goulash while you are there. It is usually what is cooking.

There probably wont be any Irish in Rocky O'reillys. But it will be busy (with loud ,drunk tourists) and expensive. I agree with that last post, get out into the suburbs and you'll find plenty of bars showing the game. The atmosphere will be that of the locals supporting their team and the beer will be a fraction of the price. There are bars with Sky all over Prague so no need to stay in the centre.

Hi packtarl
Thanks for the reply. We are definately up for getting away from the tourist area's and would like to venture into the suburbs!!!! However, just like over here in England there are many suburbs wher you can find the local bars/pubs but you WOULD NOT want to stay there for long as it can get very rough and unsafe at times. That's my only concern with going to a pub in the suburbs of Prague. How safe will it be. I'm not suggesting that its an unsafe place to be but 4 English guys in a pub in the middle of nowhere intruding on the locals football match may not go down to well even though we are fully supporting the Czech's against Portugal and hope to get some Czech Footy shirts. Do you know of any actual pubs in the suburbs?? Any names so that I can try and check them out. Three out of the Four of us are very pasionate about our football and ENGLAND. Even tough at the moment ENGLAND have let us down big time. We all support smaller English clubs so we know what the real game is all about still and that's why we wanted to experience some good old Football atmosphere in a different country and in this case in Prague supporting the Czech National Team. Cheers Gary
