Canada Which Place to Pick
Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 05:19 PM UTC
We are planning a trip to CANADA in July or September with 7 months old baby. It will be 5 to 6 days trip and we are traveling from DC region. I wanted to know which of the following places would be good for first time traveler. Is it possible to visit any of the following two places in 5/6 days
1. Quebec City & Montreal
2. Victoria and Vancouver Island

Thanks in Advance!

Hi there,

I think it definitely depends on what kind of pace you like. Quebec City and Montreal have some lovely old architecture and Montreal is very lively and fast-paced--an exciting big city experience. I cannot personally speak for Vancouver and Victoria, except to say that they both have more laid back attitudes. I personally would pick the west coast simply for the scenery and the many options available to you--festivals, galleries, city life, as well as kayaking, hiking, whale- and seal-watching. Both areas will offer music festivals in the summer as well. I hope this helps!!

Either choice would be good; it depends like the previous poster said, if you like architecture or outdoors more. Quebec and Montreal would certainly be a shorter flight if you are coming from DC.

Flying across country with an infant is not my idea of fun. You are probably used to the flexibility of traveling as adults. Adding an infant is going to bring a whole new set of challenges. We did fly into Victoria when our son was still in diapers. Although the trip was OK it was difficult flying and keeping him comfortable. Then we had to find a car rental co that had a decent car seat. All in all I would suggest a more leisurely pace that involved shorter flight times. If you do fly give the little one a half dose of triaminic to keep his ears from causing pain as you decend.

I 'd say definitely Quebec City and Montreal but then again, I am a bit biased :-))

Shorter flight is a plus and keep in mind that Quebec City is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year so it is the best time to visit as lots of special activities are going on.

Let me know if you need further help if you decide on this option.

If you have only 5 or 6 days, stay in the East and visit Montreal and Quebec City, these two cities are fascinating. Going West even if your flying will take up precious time and will be costly, air fares will be expensive as school is beginning and students are flying back and forth across the country getting ready to hit the books, I doubt you will find anything reasonable even at this early date.
