Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Athens Economy Hotel
Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 01:04 PM UTC
Yassou! I've read some great things about the Economy Hotel (Klisthenous 5, near City Hall), but also some bad things about the neighborhood around Omonia station after dark. Is it safe?

Cheers and thanks

From the other side as a local I have to tell you that Omonoia square still is much more dangerous area than Plaka and even the policemen prefer to work in other areas and not there.

As I say at my Athens page after downfall it is full of junkies, prostitutes (at some side streets) and other nice people that you probably want to avoid and not walk among them. No, it doesnt look like Red Light District in Amsterdam…:)

But you dont have to get paranoid, just dont "show" that you are a tourist too much :)

As a Greek, I consider it "safe" place, but I am sure you will not feel so comfortable there. There is a lot of marginal people but not "criminals". In "dark" hours, just avoid to talk to anybody, ignore them and continue your way. Keep walking in the main streets, among other people and avoid also crowded spots (the paradise of pickpockets).
