Paris Question RE: Paris Pass or Carnet
Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 04:40 AM UTC
We are going to Paris for 5 days in June. We have three days which we need zone 1-5 and two day that we need zone 1-3. Question: If I need to get from one side of Paris to the other (staying in zone 1) I would use one ticket each way (as long as I transferred within 1 1/2 hours), right?

If I needed to go from zone 1 to Versailles (zone 5) would I use five tickets (one for each zone) or how does that work if I purchase a carnet?

I am trying to go over my itinerary and make sure which will work better.

This question comes back all the time.
An individual ticket costs 1.60 euros
A carnet of 10 tickets costs 11.10 euros.

Each ticket gives you the right to use the metro, the buses, the Montmartre elevator (sic) and the RER within Paris with appropriate connections.

If you want to use the RER to go outisde Paris (e.g. Versailles, CDG), you need to buy a ticket for that destination. For example,a ticket Paris-Versailles was 2.80 euros last time I took it (November). You can not use, say, two single metro tickets to make up for the extar cost. A ticket to CDG is around 8 euros.

Most people familiar with visiting Paris will tell you that you are better off, buying a carnet of 10 tickets (they are reusable if you don't need all of them during your stay), and then buying individual tickets for the outside-of-Paris destinations. You will realize that you use the metro much less than you think as walking around Paris is part of the fun.

Enjoy your trip

Check out www.ratp.fr One ticket gets you anywhere in zones 1 to 3 if I remember correctly. For zone 4 and 5 costs a little extra. Yes a carnet is the best, easy to use. Signage in Metro is excellent and with a handy Matro map you will find you are an expert after your first trip on the metro.
