| Ukraine | WWII or Cold War sites to see in Ukraine?? Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 12:14 AM UTC
I am planning on a trip to Ukraine sometime within the next year or so. I definately want to tour Chernobyl and any other Cold War era sites i can find. I know there are a few different Soviet bunkers, command centers, and a submarine pen. Can anyone give me some tips of when would be a good time to visit and some good military / Soviet structures to tour? I am very interested in Military history (mostly WW2 - Present). Thanks

Hi, In Baklaklava (The Crimea, near Sevastopol) there is a former submarine repair factory. It was built inside the mountain in the 1951 after the USA bombed Japan in 1949. The seacond purpose of it is to admit and protect citizens of Sevastopol in case of atomic war. Today it is a museum.

Thanks everyone! Those are definately places i will visit when i take the trip. I've been digging around for as much info as i can find. Now i know these places are all set up for tourists with guides and all...But are there any places like that where you can go in and explore stuff that hasn't been restored at all?
I saw a History Channel presentation about a fake apartment complex somewhere in Ukraine that was build to disguise the 5 story bunker that was build underneath it. I would love to explore around a place like that where you gotta crawl through the rubble. Anyone know of places like that or is that too dangerous or closed off from the public?

Sorry, i forgot to ask also...Does the Ministry of Defense and the Alaris company still offer the chance to take part in that military "fantasy camp"? I've been reading alot about that but I can never tell how recent the information is that I'm looking at.

In Kiev there's the museum World war 2. Really good museum. It's worth of visiting. Do not miss a chance.
Odessa - catacombs (Odessa caves which are under whole city). Museum of partisan glory. Partisans lived in those caves.
