Question Posted By: Replies:
Free Anti-Virus Programs
Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 11:20 PM UTC
I'm currently using AVG Version 7.5 (free version) as my anti-virus software, however it's asking me to upgrade to version 8.0 and wants me to pay for it. Is there another good, and more importantly, FREE program that I can download for virus protection? I've got Vista on my computer if that makes any difference.
Thanks!

"Avast!" is free and very good. I tried AVG but prefer Avast, which was recommended by a friend. It seems much simpler to use and no attempts yet to get me to pay!

Not 100% sure but they have never asked for money to update.

Ricky-

They asked for $19.95 up front when I tried to register. Bas turds! now have my email and I'll probably spend the next 5 years trying to get them to stop spamming me!

I have been using the AVG free version for years and years. Now that I have seen the AVG 7.5 popups for end of May support, I did some research. I see on the AVG forums that AVG 7.5 virus definition updates has been extended and will continue to be updated until the end of 2008. Within the past week or 2, AVG has also released a free version of AVG 8.0

On one of my older laptops (Win2000), I tried out AVG 8.0 the free version. I noticed the sluggishness (more RAM memory utilization) so I've started disabling LinkScanner and other things. But it is still sluggish when compared with AVG 7.5. I have noticed that AVG 8 also gives me a crash / blue screen of death whenever I start up the computer from a complete shutdown. It could just be isolated to Win2000 systems since other Win2000 users have experienced the same thing with AVG 8. So, I un-installed it and the problem went away.

I am currently trying out Avast AntiVirus - the free Home version:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Install is a 60 day full trial with updates. When you register / re-register on their website they will email you an unlock code to get updates for a year at a time. So far so good.

Another free anti-virus to try is Avira AntiVir Personal:
