Free Anti-Virus Programs
Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 11:20 PM UTC
I'm currently using AVG Version 7.5 (free version) as my anti-virus software, however it's asking me to upgrade to version 8.0 and wants me to pay for it. Is there another good, and more importantly, FREE program that I can download for virus protection? I've got Vista on my computer if that makes any difference.
Thanks!

I'm getting that too. but I think the trick is you think you have to get the pay version. I think we can update our free version, it's just that they don't provide a link/ I'll try and see how I get on.
It'll trick my Mum into paying, I bet!!

Yes it's misleading. I googled AVG then be careful what you click on. I see there are two pay versions with big colourful "Download" buttons. but if you look carefully there is a Free version 8.0 that is not coloured and no button even, just a link.
The message you are reading makes you click on the pay versions but you don't have to :-))

See if this url works. Scroll down and you will see two blue "download" buttons but the free one is on the left side and not coloured blue.

Okay, not sure if download worked properly, it just said "thank you for downloading" I was expecting to see a proper download. What happened when you downloaded the new version and how do I tell if it's downloaded properly. Tried checking what version I have but I think it still is version 7.5

I guess it's just the way I think :-) Now that I know what to do, and it's not really easy to explain to people, I'll have to sort out my kids laptops and my best friend too, as she's not very savvy. Oh and Mum too!!

OH ok, I began the download but aborted it and uninstalled 7.5 first. Then went back to download 8.0. Then of course you must install the new one after downloading it :-)

No need for that. It replaces itself, so you van just go ahead and install the 8.0 on top of the 7.5

No when I downloaded mine it specifically advised that I uninstall 7.5 first.
Normally programmed write over but I felt it safer to do what they said :-)

Okay, sorted out the problem. For some reason the big highlighted Download program link didn't work but the one that said download from server worked for me. It uninstalled 7.5 for me so I didn't have to do that but everything seems to be working fine now :-) Thanks again, wouldn't have even thought there would still be a free version. Must be your upsidedown (NZ) thinking as opposed to my Canadian thinking ;-)

LOL, and I thought we were very similar :-) Yeah different links take you to different download sites. But it's done, so that is great!!

I also have AVG 7.5 but have not noticed any popups or whatever to indicate a new version is available. Where and when are you seeing this? Thanks.

It's been showing up on my computers every few days, saying that after 31 May 2008 the AVG version 7.5 will no longer work. Maybe your blocker is stopping it.

I happened to notice the 8.0 some weeks ago as I needed to install AVG on a new laptop. So I also updated the other computers.

Don't worry AVG is still the best protection out. I finally started paying just out of courtesy for the years of free protection I've received, with nary a glitch.

I used to pay, but had too may problems and this free AVG seems less troublesome.

I started with McAfee which I thought was ok but slowed my machine down.
I switched to AVG and it worked very well for a while.
It started attacking legitimate programs I was installing on my machine, it saw them as Trojans and deleted them, and I could not get past this problem so I switched to NOD32.
This program is brilliant; it pounces on any virus/trojan/spyware in an instant, runs in the background and most of all, does not slow the machine down, in fact I have seen a increase in the running speed of my pc since it was installed.

It's funny isn't it, because AVG has never given me trouble with downloads, and it jumps on Trojans etc straight away! I better not speak too soon :-))

Ricky-

NOD32, they'll scan for free. (Whoopie, like THAT's gonna do me any good!:) But then ask you to register, not telling you whether there's gonna be a price tag. So, is it free?
