| Olden | Olden and Briksdal Glacier Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 10:58 PM UTC
Hello, next month we are going on a cruise and one of the stops is Olden. I am looking at the possibility of organising our own excursion to see Briksdal Glacier (not to walk on it) I imagine there must be some kind of local transportation from Olden to the Glacier but so far I have been unsuccesful in finding buses, car rentals, etc. Does anybody know if there are buses that connect these two points and if so provide info. Thank you very much.

We stayed in the area in about 2004, so my memories and information may not be too good.
There was a bus service, but not very frequent. In view of your very limited time it is probably not recommended. The drive to the end of the road takes about 45 minutes. At the end of the road there is a tourist shop/guided trek centre/restauraunt/camp site. From here you cannot yet see the Briksdal Glacier, and must walk for perhaps an hour to the end of the glacier. The alternative is a *pony and trap ride up the unmade track, very popular with affluent tourists, so probably very expensive. The horses are fjord horses, they are very strong. The route goes past a waterfall, so expect to get damp from the mist at that point. At the place where the pony and trap stops you must still walk further up the valley, in fact since we went there has been extensive melting, so your walk will be a little longer. If you book the cruise excursion I suspect that it will use your limited time most efficiently, you really need to get to the road terminus quickly, then amble around the area at leisure. *I have just looked this up, they no longer use horses, only a powered truck. http://www.melkevoll.no/en/hesteskyss.htm Have a lovely cruise, the scenery and scale of the fjords is breathtaking - I am just glad that we did the glacier walk before it melted!
