| Rome | Vatican Museum pre-book tour Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 09:35 PM UTC
I posted this in the Vatican forum as well, but thought I would try here, too.
I'd like to go to the Vatican Museum while I'm there, but I would rather not get there at 6am and wait in line all day! I had found a place that offered 2-hour tours (which is all I would really need. I'd like to see the Museum but don't feel like I need to be there all day), but I can't seem to find it again. Does anyone know of anything like this that I can book in advance? Thanks. |

Hello,
You can book directly through the vatican at vatican.va. If you don't want to do a tour or wait in line all morning you can go to the museums in the afternoon. The line is generally very short after 1pm or so. Donna

Yes, agree that two hours is enough time to allow for your visit. I queued for an hour in the morning which apparently is not too bad. It was November. I wished I had gone later in the afternoon when the queues were non-existent.
Check out the calendar on the offical Vatican website. Last entrance is at 16.00 with the museum closing at 18.00 so this would suit you fine.

You certainly don't have to arrive at 6am, but everyone gets there early to avoid the queues......so there are long queues! Mid to late afternoon is a better time.
If you google there are lots of agencies offering advance tickets, but you will pay a premium of course. E.g. http://www.goporta.com/tickets/Purchase_Tickets.htm http://www.rome-museum.com/ The official museum site is: http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/z-Info/MV_Info_Orario.html I don't think they offer tickets in advance themselves: the Varican only takes requests for papal audiences/garden walks etc (via fax!).

My daughter and I were there last month and we booked a tour through Angel Tours (www.angeltoursrome.com) and really found it to be worthwhile. We took the 9am tour and were able to completely skip the line, and the guide was very informative. The tour lasted about 2 1/2 hours, and skipping the line was worth the price alone. I'd definitely recommend them.
