The ferries leave from the port of Piraeus.

Use these websites to check the schedules but it is possible that the schedules for next August are not yet complete:

www.gtp.gr (for Creta type Kriti)

www.openseas.gr (clik on the British flag for English)

There is an overnight ferry from Piraeus to Chania: http://tinyurl.com/5tjsf8

and a highspeed ferry to Rethymnon: http://www.ferries.gr/hfd/rethymno-piraeus.htm

There is a nice hostel in Rethymno, Crete http://www.yhrethymno.com/
and a cheap hotel in Chania called "Diktynna" www.deltanet.gr/diktynna
Both of those places are in the best parts of the towns and close to public transportation (cheap public buses) to go to beach (if they don't like city beach) or to explore more Crete.

Staying in Heraklion (Iraklio) where the ferry terminal is located, is not as nice as staying in any other town of Crete. So I recomand your brother Rethymno, Crete or any other small town.

See my tips on Crete, Chania, Rethymno there is lots of recent pictures and tips.
