Hi. We would like to visit Hanoi for 4 days on June 1st. We have australian passports and reside in Australia but we read on this forum elsewhere that if you are in Thailand you are exempt from being required to have visas. We will be adding this visit to Hanoi to our trip to Thailand and our flight is in and out of Hanoi departing and returning to Bangkok. So please spell it out for a confused dummy! Do I need to arrange visas? Are only Thai passport holders exempt and NOT travellers from Thailand.If needed how long will it take us to receive them, we leave on for our tripp on 28th May

I would think that you would definitely require a visa & should get it organised before you leave Australia

Yes you need a visa to get into Vietnam, if you are Thai National (ASEAN) then you don't need one.

If you are from a country that they require a visa, it doesn't matter where you fly from. For example: as an American, I always need a visa to get into Vietnam, even if I arrive from Thailand. Check the Vietnam website for a list of exempt and visa required countries.

In Bangkok it is not hard to get your visa, just go to the embassy on wireless road, near where Sukhumvit road starts at the highway. Bring your passport, a couple photos and money. Go early and you will have it back around 4:00 PM the next day. Just be nice to the people there, or you may never get the visa.

It is possible to get a visa on landing, but you have to arrange that with a travel agency that specializes in this.

The application needs to be posted to Sydney with all your documentation (passport, photo, money) and takes two weeks to come back.

I think the problem here is the nationality of the traveler on his/her passport.
It is not about where the traveler from. If the nationality on the passport is Thai, the passport holder will be exempted for a visa entering Vietnam in 30 days.

Here are some more details about Vietnam Visa Exemption:

- No Vietnam entry visa required for travel less than 30 days: Citizens of Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei and Laos.


- No Vietnam entry visa required for travel less than 15 days: Citizens of Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.


- No Visa required for travel less than 90 days or several visits within 6 months: Citizens of France holding valid diplomatic or official passports.


- No Vietnam entry visa required for travel less than 60 days: Citizens of Chile holding valid diplomatic or official passports.


- No Vietnam entry visa required for travel less than 60 days: APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holders from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies.


- No Vietnam entry visa for traveling to Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam: Foreigners and Vietnamese nationals bearing foreign passports who enter Vietnam through an international border gate and then travel to Phu Quoc Island and stay in Phu Quoc Island less than 15 days will also be exempted from Vietnam Visa. Passport must be valid for at least 45 days. After arriving in Phu Quoc Island, if visitors want to travel other places or stay in the island for more than 15 days, the immigration department will be responsible for issuing visas right on the spot.

- No Vietnam entry visa required for Vietnamese overseas less than 90 days staying if holding Vietnam Visa Exemption certificate.

You can apply for the visa in your country if it is convenient for you but the price is always higher than applying in Vietnam or Thailand. The price ranges from $15 to $30 for the service fee.
The normal processing time is from 3 to 5 working days. If you want to have the visa within one day, you have to pay more money so please arrange it in time.
