Have done all the things in Cancun. Been to major Mayan ruins & some small. Been to Excaret, Xel Ha, Isla Mujeras, Play del Carmen. Any new suggestions. Of course I could just be hypnotizes by that blue water.

True, Merida is 4 hours away, but worth the trip. On the way you can stop at Chcichen Itza, Valldolid (especially their cenotes and Convent San Bernadino), nearby ruins of Ek Balam. Off to the side of the parking lot is a cenote run by an indigenous ejido. Ride their bicycles through the jungle (only 2 km) to a cenote that you can repel into.
Closer to Merida is the charming small Yellow city of Izamal.
Once in Merida there is plenty to do.
Great Bed and breakfasts and small hotels.
Another idea is a trip to Rio Lagartos if you are going during the summer. The flamingos from Celestun "summer" there.
Enjoy

Ah-Ha! Cozumel?

On the west side you have maybe three cruise ships and San Miguel. On the east side you have....no electrical power, no land telephone service, just a few great bars and miles of fantabulous beach and-and-and hypnotic blue water! Try a scooter to get there, no bus service either.

Cancún Tankah/Tulum area

You can visit the Sian Ka'an Biosphere reserve which is just south of Tulum on the Boca Paila rd for beautiful beaches, fly fishing and you can rent kayaks also to paddle around in one of the lagoons. Also, visit the Muyil ruins and pick up a boat tour from there of the lagoon. During part of the boat tour you can float down one of the ancient hand dug canals for a refreshing treat. Also, there are many cenotes in the Tankah/Tulum area.
