Walking from Aquas Clientes to Machu Picchu Posted: Tue October 7, 2003 12:58 PM UTC
We are coming to Machu Picchu at the beginning of November, this trip is to celebrate my hubby’s 50th birthday – it’s somewhere he has always wanted to visit! We have arranged to stay the night at Aquas Clientes & would like a little more information on how to arrive at Machu Picchu on foot – is it obvious where to walk to? If not could someone tell us the best way to get there please! We are not even sure this is still possible as we heard you could only walk into the area with a guide – is this true? Any help would be much appreciated as we are finding it hard to get this sort of information!

i done the 4 day trek last year, it's amazing. As you know you can get the train to agua calientes. The train station is in the town. Then you can either walk which will take you about 2 hours (not advised). get a taxi or you can get a bus they are quite frequent. anything else let us know regards mark.

Aguas Calientes is just below Machu Picchu, and yes, you can Walk, though i didn't do it( i climbed by bus), my brother told me he did it, i don't think it's hard (i had payed my ticket), and its allowed to do it

I think its pretty obvious where to go...although it is pretty much straight up as MP is directly above Aguas Calientes, and the estimate of at least an hour and a half is probably accurate. I don't know if I woudl recommend walking there unless you plan on leaving early as it is good to spend as much time as possible in the site itself.... Also I don't believe you need a guide if you are going for the day, however guides are mandatory when doing the 4 day hike (which I did) Look at my Mp page if you want to know what to expect, it is an amazing place

Re: Re: Walking from Aquas Clientes to Machu Picchu Posted: Tue October 7, 2003 11:32 PM UTC
As I see it there are two ways to walk, both might seem obvious but one is good, the other not.
1. going directly from Aguas Calientes (nick-name for Municipalidad Machu Picchu) the same was as the buses. Don´t waste you valuable time on that! Better take the bus up, look at the "ruins" and also try to get up on Huayna Picchu to get the best view. Afterwards, if you miss the last bus down you can walk down if you like.
2. Walking "back" along the railroad a few kilometers to "km 104" and then taking a short bit of the Inca Trail, passing the ruins of Choquesuysuy and connect with Inca Trail at Winay-Wayna. This route will take you to the "main gate" of Machu Picchu, and you will arrive from above, like the Inkas, and that walk is what I think you mean. This second walk will take you some hours to do, so go up early as ninaeggens says.

el sueco option two is definitely the best! arriving in machu picchu from puerta del sol is the best part of the machu picchu visit! if you like to walk, walk the km104 trail! :-)

The price of the bus from Aquas Clientes to Machu Picchu is about USD 9 ( it's almost the price of night bus from Nazca to Arequipa ) ... so I guess it's very worth taking a walk through the option 1.... :P
and I will try the option 2 , too ... ! Thank you very much !
