Stockholm Looking for casual local lunch or "take out" suggestions
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 08:49 PM UTC
Hi,

Unfortunately I only have two days (non consecutive) in Stockholm during my August/Sept cruise in Europe and on one day was planning to walk the old town and perhaps visit a museum or two. I am looking for a casual place (outdoor would be preferred, but not necessary) to grab a local lunch and something to drink. Want to sample some traditional Swedish food, but not spend a lot of time or money. Don't even mind getting something at a market (fish?) to take out, if this is even an option. Can you suggest something?

On my second day I thought I'd take a ferry to Fjärdeholmarna or Vaxholm and would want to find something similar.

Any advice you can provide would be appreciated.

Hi, have a look at this map (it looks a bit fuzzy but it's the best I could find...).
http://www.sis.se/iso2002/stockholm_map.asp
Gamla stan means 'old town' and thats where you'll find the royal palace, the big shopping street, etc...from there i took a walk to the island with a number 6 on it. it was a long walk, but it was nice (you can take a ferry, but we prefered to walk). on that island you'll find some museums, and there's also a Zoo. We had lunch in a terrace around the small bridge that goes to that island. Do you see a street, shown in white, that goes paralell to the water towards that island? well, all along that street you'll find many nice places to eat, of all prices and menus. the view there is nice as they face the waterchannel and there are many boats parked, etc.
im speaking from my experience as a tourist. im sorry im not telling you exact names/directions, but i cant recall. surely someone from stockholm will give you many more ideas and details.
Hope this helps, though!

Here are the schedules, prices, etc. of the ferry to Fjäderholmana: http://www.strommakanalbolaget.com/EN/dagsutflykter/fjaderholmarna/index.htm and Vaxholm: http://www.strommakanalbolaget.com/EN/dagsutflykter/vaxholm/index.htm.

The Vasa Museum, surprisingly, actually has really good food, and it is very traditional. It is slightly more expensive than normal for lunch, but I think it is worth it. It isn't in the Old Town, but it has outdoor seating and is right by the water, so it is really nice.

Hi!
This is a really basic tip. If you walk up to to the square outside metro-station Slussen, Södermalmstorg, you can find two food-stands. One with freshly fried "strömming", a local fish, of herring-heritage, fried á la minute, served with home-made potato mash and traditional sauces or lingon-berry jam (it IS good, I promise!).

On the same square, try Souvas, on another food.stand. Souvas is dished made of reindeer, really tasty. There are diferent dishes to choose from, all good, with meat, potatoes, mushrooms, lingonberry, salad. Yummy! Reindeer meat is sooo tasty!

Both places are fast ans really affordable. You can eat it at the benches on the spot, or find a spot of your own with a lovely view over the water, ferries and the island Djurgården.
Bon appetit!

Suovas has closed sadly. I think so anyway. There was no sign that it was open when I walked by last week.
