Possible to have draft travel pages/tips?
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 05:32 PM UTC
I'm working on updating my VT travel pages after a long trip to the middle east.

I an wondering if I could work on them but not make then public until I'm finished. For example, I just add a tip, but I need to find the best pictures for the tips. So now, I have some tips with no pictures.

I would like not to make the tip or page public until I'm finishes. Like adding pictures. Is that possible?

This has been asked for before, I think it would be a great idea.

I had a recent page which ended up as an updated page due to other things getting in the way of writing :( Draft pages would be a real bonus when you have to collect your thoughts & I agree select the right pictures to post as well.

I agree.
In the meantime, I sometimes start writing my tips in a word documant and only transfer when I'm ready.

I agree and understand that it would be useful for some of us but I do not need it myself as I work as the following:
1) I select and order the photos, 2) I write the tips in a word processor, 3) Only when the whole page is finished do I launch it on VT.

Sometime I write pages/tips during lunch time at work, so I don't have access to my pictures at that time.

*jumping on the bandwagon*

Even with the workaround of creating tips in Word and transferring it after the tip is done and the photo(s) are ready, I would love to have the draft pages. This is useful for the "VT'ing on two PC's" issue, and it would also work when travelling - sometimes I jot down stuff - why not right into VT?

A third use would be with this new "turn a forum reply into a tip" function. Often, I may want to do that, but need to flesh out the tip some more and add the photos. I would prefer to put the forum reply into a draft tip.

Last good reason, it may spur me on to deal with my draft tips. Perhaps they can expire after 6 months or a year or something so one is forced to do something with them. At present I have a few tips that have been under construction for over a year (while I answer a few forum questions). ;o)

Drafts - Yes Please !
And yes - I agree with Redlats, it would eliminate all my - and others - "building sites" and the constant updating when a typo has been pointed out for example.

I add the photos first, and mark the tip in the text area as "under construction" although I do sometimes write a little text just so I know what I intended the tip to be about. And then I hope I don't get any rates on the tip until I finish it with times of admission or addresses or whatever else is needed. I put the tips in my trip planner so that I know which ones need to be finished and I don't forget where they are.

Before I get to the place where I am writing tips and uploading photos (i.e. while I am still traveling), I write up what is happening including as many details as I can in emails to my family. I use the photos I have taken as a guide so as not to forget how it went. Then it is pretty simple when I get home, to cut and paste the text into a travelogue and put in pictures that I don't intend to use in tips.

After I get the photos for a tip uploaded, then I can work on the tip anyplace I have access to a computer (at work for instance). I can go to the travelogue and take any relevant text and paste it into the tip. I can also do the searching necessary to get the web page addresses etc for the places I've seen, stay, or eaten from anywhere after I get the photos up there.

Gosh grandmaR - I am full of admiration for your organisation, you make it sound so easy but I am sure you have to be strict with yourself.
I always take lots of little note books from the time when I used to write a travel Journal; these days anyone looking at them would think we had turned round and gone home after about day 4 or 5 days. Will try harder. Thanks for sharing your methods.
