Krakow Gluten free eating
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 12:23 PM UTC
We are visiting Krakow for 4 nights in July. My husband has a food allergy so is on a gluten free diet which means he can't eat anything containing wheat flour so no bread, pasta, pizza, cakes etc etc.It also means he can't eat sauces that are thickened with flour ( cornflour, rice flour are ok). Can anyone advise of places to eat which would be ok for him. He can eat any meat, fish, veg etc.

Hi,
I think you can go to all restaurants, just ask for free gluten meals...
I recomend:
Tesoro del Mar - it is restaurant located in Kazimierz - a magical disctrict of Cracow. That place is to be found in a historic terraced house. Interesting interior design and elegant decoration as well as intimateness, all contribute to unique atmosphere of the place. The cuisine, in turn, is created by a young and talented chef.In Spanish, Tesoro del Mar means treasures of the sea. There are places to which we always come back. They are unforgettable for all our senses: taste, smell, vison and hearing.
Below you can find list of Cracow restaurants:
http://www.visit.krakow.pl/restauracje.html

If you want to try typical Polish food You have to go to:
CHŁOPSKIE JADŁO - restaurant
Św Agnieszki 1 Street, Cracow

Have a nice time in Poland!!!! :)

Polish restaurants are famous of grilled (GRILL/GRILOWANE...etc) meat and fish. You will be able to dine in most restaurants.
Just write on the piece of paper:
DIETA BEZGLUTENOWA / DIETA BEZMACZNA / ALERGIA NA MAKE
(gluten free diet/ flour free diet/ allergy to the flour)
and give it to the waiter.

There is also a grocery store that has some gluten free products.
EKO-SKLEP
ul. Krzywa 6, 31-149 Kraków; Śródmieście tel. +48 12 634 33 99

Also in normal grocery stores, the food articles will have ingrediences written in Polish as well as some other popular language (usually english).

In restaurants don't order anything that's "PANIEROWANE" - breaded.
Rather don't order fried meat, or any meat sauce or gravy (they always have flour).
You will not find any dish where the flour is substituted by cornflour or rice flour. Pols love their wheat flour ;-)

In all the touristy places (Old Town and Kazimierz) in Krakow, restaurant staff will speak English.

some other Polish links I found you may look through:

Wytwórnia Artykułów Bezglutenowych Bezgluten, Kraków

Finax - produkty bezglutenowe

Fundacja Przekreślony Kłos i Piekarnia Bezglutenowa

That EKO-SKLEP I just wrote about is close to the OLD TOWN and TRAIN STATION
Here is the map:
http://maps.google.com/maps?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=ul.%20Krzywa%206%2C%2031-149%20Krak%C3%B3w&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl
Or just google:
Krzywa 6, Cracow
in Google Maps.

I too have a problem with wheat flour. Poles have wonderful rye products, which I can eat. Their restaurants and markets are full of fresh meats, game, vegetables and fruits. We like to stay in an apartment so we can shop for fresh foods and have breakfast or some dinners "at home". Many ways to solve the problem.
Have a great time~
