Several of our work computers have also produced this message. According to the Microsoft website, SP3 includes all previously issued updates. So if you've been updating regularly, there shouldn't be much there you haven't got already. Incidentally, the website also says that the download is between 97 and 867 kb. I suppose that doesn't include other items such as Internet Explorer 7 and Media Player. Our office internet connection is so slow that I've told people not to download it, and I'll investigate the contents this evening.

hmm, I have been updating regularly. It's KB936929 and it's between 68.4 MB - 305.8 MB.
I seem to remember that I didn't update to IE7 (after reading bad experiences). I'm still on IE6. Might that have something to do with it?

The update seemed small and OK, but right afterwards ms office also wanted an update to office sp3. And THAT one was big...

I updated it last night. The release notes say if you have Internet Explorer 7.x or 8.0 beta, you will never be able to uninstall them and go back to Internet Explorer 6.x. I have IE 6.x on my small travel computer. (1kg and 7 inch screen) I like IE 6.x because it takes less real state on the screen and leaves more area for viewing the web page. Just be aware that you should have IE 6.x at the time you install SP3 if you want to use IE 6.x in the future.
Anyway. no problems so far
I have office 2007 with one note. It did not ask for an update after xp sp3.

Re: XP Servicepack SP3 Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 12:02 PM UTC
I would hold off installing XP SP3 for another week or so (to see what other people's experiences are) since Microsoft was ready to release it last week and had to hold it up due to some fix for last minute incompatibilities.
The full blown download is about 300 MB but if you have been installing the update s after XP SP2, then it should be smaller. I've seen reports that XP SP3 does not include IE 7 so it would need to be downloaded separately.

Yes, XP sp3 does not include IE 7, which is a good thing for people like me that like IE6 better.

Re: XP Servicepack SP3 Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 06:45 PM UTC
I wished I'd read this yesterday, as I had my tech guy over to fish out some horrible virus that bypassed all my firewalls and up-to-date Norton Anti-Virus over the weekend. Then he said I should update to SP3, which I agreed to, and it took forever (hours) to download, even though I thought my Microsoft updates had been happening automatically -- it's just that this SP3 is big, I guess. Then he said he'd update to IE7, which he said didn't have any significant changes, just some additional "protection" and a slightly altered toolbar. However, I've been having trouble with it already. My Favorites won't open very easily, as the screen keeps flashing back to my homepage. I have to find one Favorite first that will open (maybe clicking on it three times), and then open on top of it the one that wouldn't open. Also, in VT forums, I can't paste a link into the top browser line like I used to do with IE6. Don't know how to solve this, as I'm no computer genius.

Haven't a clue how you can fix this ! But if you can't get on with IE7 why don't you try Firefox. Quite a few people here use it, and I for one much prefer it to IE.

Yep, long time since I used any type of IE. All goes in Firefox here (Except for one site I have to use at work that only functions with IE for some bizarre reason)
As for SP3, it all took just some minutes....

Yes, I'm debating Firefox if I can't get this straightened out. Thanks!

Now I am definitely glad to keep on waiting to install XP SP3 as there are reports of constant rebooting issues on machines with AMD chips (rather than Intel chips):
http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2008/05/08/does-your-amd-based-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx
and things such as not being able to "downgrade" back to Internet Explorer 6 if you installed Internet Explorer 7 and XP SP3:

I haven't upgraded to anything yet. And definitely keeping IE6 on my desktop.
My laptop is also still on SP3 Servicepack.
I'll wait until further info.
Thanks you all!
