State of Sabah Hotel at Tambunan, Sabah, Malaysia
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 05:17 AM UTC
Hi. Does anybody know any hotel at Tambunan, Sabah, Malaysia – just about anything will do, I just need it to sleep there after coming down from the Crocker Range and before going to Ranau next morning? I know about the Borneo Heritage Village (formerly known as the Tambunan Village Resort Center) but it is somewhat inconveniently located out of the town wit its access to public transport.

Besides. I have read about bad shape of road from Tambunan to Ranau. Does anybody know about current situation of this road with respect to the public buses/microbuses going along it? I should be there this August. Thanks.

Thanks

Hi rrajah,

Thank you very much for this reply, esp. the information about no public transport between Tambunan and Ranau (my damn LP guidebook sais complete opposite). I will be on the Crocker Range on my own (just me and my wife that is), probably staying at the Gunung Emas Highland Resort, so it is not likely I could get to Ranau (too bad, this area seemed to be interersting to see at least form the bus).

Under the circumstances it would be clearly better to go to Kinabalu NP via Kota Kinabalu. Could you recommend a cheap hotel in walking distance from the proper bus station in Kota Kinabalu (the Inanam bus station i belive) - we will just sleep there and hop on a bus first thing in the morning? Appreciate ...

Hi rrajah,

Thanks for your offer but I think it will not be needed - I always prefer to use public transport so that I learn more about the country I am visiting. Now, when I abolished my plan to go down to Tambunan, my Sabah itinerary became quite simple and easy to do.

You may be right about the LP guide being copied, but I have no idea where this link about public transport between Tambunan and Ranau came from. Several internet sources mentioned that this road is for 4WD only ..

Just in case anybody is using this thread to get information, I need to say that I have found out that the information provided above by rrajah has proved to be rather unfounded. Owing to a reply received to the same question on other forum I have learned the following:

1. The Tambunan Village Resort Center (TVRC) is the only reasonable accommodation around Tambunan (another hotel of unknown name directly at Tambunan seems to be closed). The TVRC has bamboo chalets and double rooms at bamboo longhouse (these are for RM50 for room with shared shower, and RM60 for room with a bath attached). An e-mail contact of the TVRC is borneohv@streamyx.com - they are very helpful.

2. The public transport between Tambunan and Ranau is readily available. It is 20 minutes walk to bus stop at Tambunan town but the TVRC is offering to make booking for you, meaning that the bus will come to collect you at the TVRC reception.

3. The Gunung Emas Highlands Resort up on the Crocker Range is operating and can be contacted by phone only: 06-0138523710. Yet, once again the TVRC is offering to make booking there for you.

Happy travelling to everybody.
