Hi all, can anyone suggest a great place outside of Santiago for novice skiers to ski for half-full day?

Also don't forget that there are a good number of SKI resorts south of Mendoza, Argentina.
These are not too crowded and should be less expensive than most in Chile. Get to do a little touristing while skiing also... Isn't it FARELLONES the ski resort at the border w/Argentina/Chile that is about 120 miles away?

Portillo is the ski resort on the way to the border with Argentina. Check prices as a lot of things related to tourism in Argentina have shot up in price.
For beginners, Valle Nevado is good and you can get a van up in the morning and back down in the afternoon. Google Skitotal.

We're leaning toward El Colorado b/c it's nearly 50% beginner and we're novice skiers at best...it appears to be closest to Santiago as well.
What is the best way to get directly to the resort from the Santiago airport? Should we rent a car? We'd be staying at the resort only one night, a Saturday.

There are 2 ways:
1. Take a bus from the airport to Pajaritos Metro and take the metro (Line 1) all the way to the end of the line. Near the last station are several ski equipment hire places and buses to Colorado leave from there. 2. Hire a car.
