| Malaysia | Good location to snorkel and holiday Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 12:37 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be arriving in Kuala Lumpur on 30th August and plan on spending a few days in Kuala Lumpur then travelling a bit, including Singapore. I have recently be introduced to snorkelling whilst in Fiji and wonder if anyone can recommend a good location for snorkelling within Malaysia? Thank you. |

The islands in Eastern Coast of Peninsular Malaysia - namely Perhentian, Redang and Tioman - are renowned as great locations for snorkeling.
Perhentian and Redang are located in the Northern part of Peninsular Malaysia and you can access them by flying into Khota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu (Check www.airasia.com the low fares airlines serving these airports from KL). Khota Bharu (often referred to as the cradle of Malay culture) is a town worth visiting itself and you can pair the visit to the town with snorkeling in one of the islands. Redang is located in the Southern part of Peninsular Malaysia, closer to Singapore. There are direct flights from KL and Singapore with www.berjaya-air.com. As an alternative, you can drive to the the village of Mersing from Singapore, or you can catch a flight from KL to Johor Bharu (also served by Airasia) and then drive. There are some worth destinations in Malaysian Borneo as well, but if you are not planning traveling there already, with the choices listed above, it is not worth traveling on purpose. Enjoy your snorkeling! Giuseppe

I would take an advise of one of the experienced travel professionals just to have a hassle –free vacation. I’ve been to Malaysia and Singapore. My trip was arranged through the travel company Orient Flexi Pax Tours. It was a great experience! They offer a private car tour as well. As for the snorkeling, I would recommend Penang, and just one hour away way from Penang by high-speed catamaran, explore Pulau Payar, the Marine Park with the crystal clear water , colorful marine life and large corals It is ideal for snorkeling.
From Kuala Lumpur you can fly to Kuching, Borneo to see the “long houses” in a jungle and Kinabalu National Park (orangutan sanctuary). I’ve been there, it worth the trip

I took my family to Tioman Island, and we took a boat to Coral Island and the snorkeling was fantastic.
We took a bus from Singapore to Mersing then a boat from there. I took my family, but I would probably fly next time instead of wasting the time traveling by bus. I took the advise from VT and stayed at the Bamboo Inn on ABC Beach. It was great!

I recommend Redang island, Perhentian Island and Lang tengah (all in Terengganu state). They are beautiful!
For RM 30 or so (per head), you could get a lot of boat operators taking you to these three islands (they're just nearby to each other).

As mentioned above, if you are here only a few days in Malaysia, the easiest is to fly to Langkawi or Penang from KL and take the day trip to Pulau Payar (located between Penang and Langkawi)for snorkelling.
