| Los Angeles | City maps Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 10:16 PM UTC
Have been trying to find a Los Angeles/surrounding areas city map for use in the car. The downloadable ones don't allow enough detail, and have checked tourism sites. Any ideas?

The Thomas Guide is your best bet, but I'm warning you now, it's a large book! But it's the most comprehensive for the area.

Sometimes I find detailed maps at our local bookstores and buy b-4 I travel internationally- you can always contact the L.A. chamber of Commerce and see if they have some free ones to send you- also try Craig'slist.com, California tourism board, or pick up one at a convenience store when you get there. Hope this helps-

Thanks for the suggestions! I hadn't thought of the Chamber, or Craig's list. I'll give those a try--again, thanks for the help.

I second the recommendation for a Thomas Bros guide.

When you arrive find the nearest large grocery store (Von's, Ralphs, Albertsons) and go to the checkout stand. You will find a large selection of local maps at the check out stand for a couple of dollars.

If you are a member of an auto club, such as AAA, they furnish maps for you.

Also, maps are sold at most gas stations. These aren't quite as detailed as Thomas Brothers Guides, but not as expensive either.
If you want something that will give you an idea of the areas you plan to visit while you're still home you might check Yahoo trip planner. Punch in the address and zoom the map to street level you can navigate that way and it's pretty intersting.

Most of the maps in the grocery stores are from Thomas Guide. They are just for more specific areas than buying the entire "Los Angeles" book.

I forgot, I belong to AAA and they are great for maps. If you belong to AAA or a related association just get them before you leave or look up a close location for when you get here. The local location usually has more detailed maps than the location across the country.
Most places now have "vending" machines that dispense maps at the front door. You swipe your membership card, punch in the code number for the map you want, and it spits it out.

Jimbo, you forgot about AAA? I didn't. Look above, about 4 answers ago. AAA. Ah, age does strange things to one. What day is it? lol
