| Liguria | Travel between Liguria and Tuscany Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 06:07 PM UTC
I will be in La Spezia, going to Siena the first week of June. WHat are the travel options? Been on Trenitalia and it seems arduous by train. Any ideas out there?

I think you can take a train from Pisa to La Spezia. You can spend some days in Florence and then head to Pisa. This is my 2 cents suggestion.
Happy travel!

It'll be more arduous by bus, imo, even if one exists.
I personally don't think a 3-and-a-bit-hour train journey is arduous at all. You have several time options. Look here: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html You wouldn't be able to fly in 3 hours, allowing for travel to/from airport, check-in etc.

from the locations you describe, have you considered renting a car? Much of this trip is on the autostrada or you can go (at a slower pace) cross country visiting some of the smaller Tuscan villages.

Thank you all for suggestions. Just confirming that the train is the best route. It is not the three-hours of travel, there are two connections. However, since I love European trains, I look forward to the trip.

Connections should not be a problem at all. On most trains you only have to change once, at Empoli, so choose your travel time carefully.
You will have enough time to make the connection (click 'details' on the Trenitalia site to see how long for each departure) and (in my experience) Italian stations and trains are well-signed/indicated/have audible announcements, even if not in English. Just ask someone if you can't work out which platform you need. 'Dov'e il binario per treno al Siena, per favore?' is almost certainly not correct Italian, but it works for me! :-)
