| Kenya | Direct route from Masai Mara to Amboseli Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 03:32 PM UTC
a hard one but hope someone can help:
later in the year i want to get between the mara and amboseli without looping back north via nairobi on the main roads. is it possible to drive direct east from Ololaimutiek Gate via Morijo/Nguruman Escarpment to Magadi Lake? then from the lake east along railway track route to Kajado, joining the road there to amboseli. on the old map i have it shows a dirt tracks linking these and it doesnt matter if it takes longer than the usual road route. i will use a 4x4 and have a lot of off road experience. any advice appreciated! |

I would have thought if there was a half decent road from Amboseli to the Mara that all the safari traffic would use it rather than the long trek up the main highway. Have you driven in Kenya? its not for the feint-hearted!

thanks tembofan - i expect off road dirt tracks not a "half decent road" otherwise as you say it would be well used and known by the safari buses...and clearly marked on maps. to answer your question: i previously did a bit of driving in kenya on a few trips - roughly a roundabout route west to mount elgon (on the way to uganda) - around the central area - up to lake turkana and around and down via marsabit...suppose a few thousand kilometres in total. probably like you, i love africa driving and planning more to add to the seven sub-sahara countries i did overland trips in already.
