| Florida | Panama City Beach Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 02:04 PM UTC
I have not been to PCB in about 18 years. I now have 2 children of my own and want to take them to Shell Island. We are going to be there for 7 days with two seniors, two teenage girls, and an 11 year old boy. I would like any suggestions on the best things to do and the best places to eat. I am also concerned about red tide and keep checking the mote marine website every week. We had a trip scheduled for Indian Shores a few years ago and found out that red tide was there so we went to Myrtle Beach instead. I love Florida and my son has never been there. I really hope the beach will be in good shape. Thanks for any information.

If you have not been to PCB in 18 yrs, you are in for a real shock. It is nothing but high rise resrts... no more mom & pop hotels or places to eat. It certainly does not have the "old time Florida " feel anymore. Shuckum's Oyster Bar is a favorie of ours. So is Captain Andersons.

St. Andrews Park (where you catch the shuttle for shell island) is an excellent place to snorkel. The water in the bay is clear. Just be sure to bring tons of sunscreen and drinks. I would suggest coming on to Florida, especially if your son has never seen it. IF red tide is at PCB, you can move up to Fort Walton Beach or Pensacola or down towards Treasure Island (which is littered with shells). Remember the tide is like seaweed. It does not affect the whole coast, just certain areas when its coming in.
