| Phuket | HELP! Re: Child with severe peanut allergy Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 08:06 AM UTC
A friend of mines husband wants the family to go on holiday in Phuket, and my friend is worried sick about her youngest son who has severe peanut allergy and what food he will be safely able to eat. I have been to Phuket and she asked me my opinion, but I went with adults who basically lived on Thai and seafood and I don't want to say yes go in case something happened to him... Is there anyone out there in the same situation that can give their opinion or their experiences.

I wish I were lucky enough to live in Thailand, but I too am allergic to peanuts. Your friend's son should be okay. Just make sure that he doesn't eat any dishes that were probably made in peanut oil (fried) or have peanuts in them. Some salads may have a peanut sauce so be careful of that too, but he should be okay. All Thai food does not use peanuts and is quite delicious. How severe is the allergy might I ask? Anaphylaxis? Does he carry epi pens?

Stay away from satay sauce (contains peanuts) and Massaman Curry (also contains peanuts).
When you arrive, have the concierge at your hotel or the owner of your lodging write a short message in Thai that says: Peanut allergy Please NO peanut oil NO peanut sauce NO peanuts Thank you! Carry this note around and show it to the manager of the restaurant when you are seated. Most Thai food does not contain peanuts or peanut oil. Hope your friend has a great trip with the family!

Thanks for you feedback, yes its anaphylaxis and he does carry the epi pen, but he is also alergic to some dairy i.e., milk, cheese but not butter. His mother wanted to know if there were I guess more western type places to eat in Phuket, like burger places (not McDonalds) etc.

Western places? On Phuket? Just about every place to eat has Western food on the menu since tourists outnumber Thai people on the island at a ratio of about 5 to 1 during high season. No need to worry. I would still have carry around a little note written in Thai, if I were the mom, though.
