Cork Short Break in Cork
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 07:51 AM UTC
Hi, my wife and I ( late 60s ) will be coming from Edinburgh for about four days in September. Is the airport the best place to hire a car ? No accommodation booked so what is the best way to explore the area ? E.G. One night B&Bs ? What is the going rate for 3* B&B ? For such a short stay would we be better off using public transport to and from airport and just book day trips from a B&B based in the city?

There is good public transport to and from the city with Bus Eireann and Skylink. Hiring the car or not ? If you don't mind driving and want to do a lot of exploring then it might be more convenient but if you want a break from driving, I think you would get by fine with public transport. As regards the B&B, there are literally hundreds to choose from. Do you want to say in the city or the county ? I think your best bet wouldbe to stay in or near th ecity centre so you will be close to the bus and train stations. From Cork you can do public transport trips to places like Kinsale, Cobh and Midleton and organised bus tours to Kerry and West Cork. There's a lot of information/contact details/travel info on trips from Cork on the off the Beaten track section of my Cork page. There are loads of really good Cork pages on VT and I'm sure you'll find all the information you need on them. I live in Cork, so feel free to email me if you want more specific details on anything. Have a great time in Cork :))

Thanks for the info. I think we'll stay in the city and let someone else do the driving.

Very wise idea as parking is generally a nightmare in most place in Ireland.
I hope you have a good time here and well done for choosing Cork over the'other place' :))
