| Penang | Bus from Airport to Tanjung Bungah? Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 06:42 AM UTC
I was wondering if there is a bus service from the airport to Tanjung Bungah / Batu Ferrenghi.
Next month I will travel to Penang and everything must be as cheap as possible and 60 RM for a taxi is quite a lot. Hope some of you can help??!!??! |

well RM60.00 is only AUS 21.00 and its quite some distance to batu ferringhi or Tanjung bungah from the airport between 3/4hr to 1hr in distance depending on the traffic so i believe the taxi fare is justified. No buses leave from the airport complex so you have to walk some distance to the main road dragging luggage to catch a bus to georgetown then transfer to a bus for Tanjung Bungah etc..In my opion I would spend the 60.00 to 70.00 ringett to get there because you wont be climatised to the humid and hot weather and walking is not easy when sweating and thirsty. If you decide to go by taxi purchase your taxi ticket from the Taxi counter inside the airport complex dont try and barter for one yourself as you will get ripped off.

I agree with japapee.
you will certainly feel it is worth for $$ to get the taxi. you may want to opt for the transfer provided by the hotel. if it is cheaper then you might want to go ahead. another option is that you rent a car. you can travel with it in pg. pg is a small island,so, you will have no problem with driving around. The local staff at the airport, if they don't have their own transport, do walk out to take the buses. There is a new bus company called Rapid Penang I strongly recommend over the other bus companies through out your stay in Penang. New and full airconditioned and does not wait for passengers to fill up the bus. The cost from Bayan Lepas to Komtar should be RM2 and to Batu Ferringhi another RM2. But you have to walk out about 15 minutes and change bus at Komtar. When you exit the lobby of the airport, ask the staff working at the convenient stall or car rentals for more information.
If your arrival is not too late, before 7pm, it is a fair option to stretch your travel money. Reason: it may take about an hour to get to Komtar and give another hour including waiting time to get Tanjung Bungah/Batu Ferringhi. Another saver is to airport taxi to Bukit Jambul Shopping Complex (RM30?) where there is a bus stop where you can catch easily catch Rapid Penang bus to Komtar then change to Tanjung Bungah/Batu Ferringhi.

As mentioned, there is no direct bus service from airport to Tanjung Bungah.
Local staff at airport who do not have transport do walk out to take the bus. I strongly recommend taking Rapid Penang Bus, a new company with new, aircond bus and do not wait for passengers to fill up unless the other older bus companies. It is RM2 to Komtar where you change bus to Tanjung Bungah for another RM2. Depending on the time of your arrival and the weather, you may opt for Rapid Penang if you have time and adventure and want to try the cheapest alternative. Ask the local staff working at the convenient stall or car rentals at the arrival lobby for more information. I would give at least 3 hours for you to finally get to your destination by bus. Your taxi may get you there in less than hour. It is illegal to get unauthorized transport service if someone approach you for a private transport arrangement at the airport. So don't go that route as there are officers always on a look out to catch them. Perhaps if you meet someone on the plane, you could get a free ride to town or share taxi. The taxi has same charge whether 1 or 4 persons. Another alternative is to take a taxi to Bukit Jambul Shopping Complex (RM30)where you can easily catch a Rapid Penang bus to Komtar and then change to Tanjung Bungah. I hope the State Government will reinstate the bus service to the airport soon instead of protecting the taxi drivers with the outrageous fares.
