Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Beijing I am in a Dilemma....
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 01:58 AM UTC
I have already post this question in Shanghai forum, I need as many advise/opinions!

I have signed up for a trip to Beijing/Inner Mongolia/Shanghai 2 months back. I will be going with my husband and 2 kids aged 8 and 11.
The thing is I keep reading of the deadly EV71 virus that are going around in China and it affects kids and have killed 20plus kids so far and I am so worried now. I have already paid a deposit of $2000 to the tour agency abd have to pay the rest in 10 days time. Do you think I should continue with the trip or should I cancel? I will be in a package tour, just the 4 of us with a guide.

I will only be in Beijing for 1 day, then off to Inner Mongolia for 4 days then 2 nights in Shanghai. What's the situation in China now? I will be calling the travel agency later to see what my options are...

Thanks

There are millions of people in China and only 20 have died? I think you are worrying too much. Relax and enjoy your trip. Take hand sanitizer gel and follow good hygiene practices.

I think you should relax and try to enjoy your trip. No doubt the virus is an issue but i doubt it very much that it would effect you.
Peace

according to the reports 11,000 people have contracted the virus and 26 have died so far. Thats less about 11,000 in a country of one billion and of those who contracted it about 00.2% have died. I think this is a typical overblown media story. My guess is your average serious influenza outbreak would be about the same mortality rate but since they tend to affect elderly populations and are considered normal they aren't reported on.

I was in Hong Kong the night the first SARS victim died I left there and visited Vietnam 4 days later (the suspected source country). I am happy to tell you I am alive and kicking and didn't hestitate for a moment to enjoy my holiday.

To put this in perspective unless the outbreak gets much worse you have a .0011% chance of contracting the illness and if you do you have a 00.2% chance of dying. Thats a 1 in 38 million chance of dying by going to China. I think the car ride to the airport will be the most dangerous thing you do on your trip.

Beijing and Shanghai have much better medical systems, don't worry and enjoy your trip. Avoid visiting some villages in inner provinces such as Anhui if you have already planned to do so.

Don't worry. It is not so bad as you think. The sanitation of hotels in Shanghai and Inner Mongolia is very good. I think you will have a pretty tour in China. It will leave you everlasting memories for your family.

From the news reports it sounds like the cases are mainly in Fuyang, Anhui province. Nowhere near where you're going, so I don't see any undue cause for worry.

We just returned from 10 days in China (Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai) with our 7 year-old daughter and had no problems. We found the Chinese people to be healthy (very few people we saw had colds or flu) and friendly. Enjoy your visit!
