| Paris | Navigo Decouverte vs. Carte Orange (Metro weekly pass) Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 01:33 AM UTC
I'll be in Paris at end of May for a week. I have found conflicting information about a weekly pass for Metro and RER.
Is Carte Orange no longer available, and must I ask for the new Navigo Decouverte? Where can I buy them? I plan to bring passport size photo for the application. Any practical info would be useful. Merci, Jim |

Jim,
I used a Carte Orange a year ago in Paris (sorry; not exactly current information). But I still see it on the www.ratp.com website. Note that it doesn't show up on the English language version of the website for some reason. You'll need to use the French version (click on 'Titres et tarifs'). Also, be aware that the Carte Orange is strictly for Monday through Sunday, not any 7-day period. You can buy them in any Metro station. I've had some ticket agents try to sell me the more expensive Paris Visite pass, so know your price ahead of time (it'll also be posted on the glass of the ticket window) and keep asking for what you want. Sorry, I'm not familiar with the Navigo Découverte, so I can't help there. Enjoy your visit.

I think you can still get the Carte Orange but it is being phased out in favor of the password-protected Navigo Pass. There isn't an exact date on the web site, but you should still be able to get them this May.
When we go to Paris for a week, we don't bother with the passes. We simply get a carnet of 10 Metro tickets. We can share them between us and have never managed to use all 10 in a week. We walk a lot since Paris is so pretty. All the pass information on the ratp web site is in French except the Paris Viste Pass (which is expensive for what it is). If you don't read French, try right clicking your mouse and scroll down to "Translate Page into English" and see if that is any help. Some translations are better than others but it should give you a good idea of the information. The carnet costs 11.10 euros and you can share. The Carte Orange costs 16 euros each and you are limited to Monday through Sunday, then must buy a new pass. The carnet has no time limit attached. Enjoy your trip.
