| Venezuela | Which Bus to Use? Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 12:06 AM UTC
I need to go to Cuidad Guayana from Caracas. Will I be able to do this during the day or is it a overnight thing? Is it possible to go to like Cuidad Bolivar or Maturin by day and then use a smaller bus line to complete the trip. I would like to avoid night travel if possible.

The journey from Caracas to Ciudad Bolivar is 9 hours and from Caracas to Ciudad Guayana it is 11,5 hours. Night buses are more frequent, but there should be some morning buses as well (at least there are in the opposite way).

I am in Caracas right now and I just returned from an expedition to the Henry Pittier National Parl. I was trying to make it to Canaima , but it didn´t work as planned. For a bus, my guide recommended the La Bandera bus station. They also have a line of what they call Ejecutivos, which are buses also, just a bit more comfortable.
You will have to take a taxi to the bus station, they are not too expenssive, but the thing is, if they notice a foreign accent or a Gringo look, aka white, they will overcharge you. Best thing is to have a local guiding you. I hope that you speak some Spanish because very few Venezueleans do. An you should't be too worried about travelling during the night. It gives you a chance to sleep , so you can have the day to take care of your trip. You don't want to be alone during the night time in a remote location, trust me. Buses, at least the ones that I travelled on, have no schedule for the most part. Punctuality is an unknown word in Venezuela. Drivers take off as they feel they have enough customers. There's no saying when you're going to get at the destination either, since unexpected things, such as crazy traffic can kick in at any time. So, whatever you do, allow yourself plenty of time. There is so much more to say. Nobody can warn you enough about Caracas. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Last year I took the airport bus to Parque central and from there a taxi to Rodovias bus terminal. I bought a ticket for the nightbus (bed/cama) and the price was written on the sign behind the ticket counter.
I just had a look at Rodovias webpage and it says there is a bus (ejecutivo) to Puerto Ordaz (Ciudad Guyana) at 7.30am. The ticket is BsF 50,50 and the journey takes 10 hours. There is also a bus (cama) at 10am. the ticket for that bus is 54,50. Have a looka at: www.rodovias.com.ve/
