I am traveling to Asia in June and have a two day layover in Bangkok. I am wondering if anyone can recommend a reputable place to buy a diamong engagement ring? Would I be able to purchase something significantly less than in the U.S.? I am looking for something under the $1,500 USD (48,000 Baht). Thanks in advance.

Bangkok isn't the place for a casual gem buyer to shop.
There isn't a discussion of gem scams, without Bangkok being mention.

Go to Gem International (ask any taxi driver) Its Goverment Owned and is up front with proper accrediation. My wife brought diamonds from there and I got free beer from the bar whilst she was looking. Barter with the taxi driver for a lower fare as he gets fuel vouchers off them for taking you there. Also they will pick you up from your hotel room and drop you back for free if you ring them up.
Most Day tour operators will take you there also on the way back from the tour as they also get free fuel vouchers for getting you in the front door. Gem International is a big concern so they have to to the right thing by their customers, they won't rip you off like the small gem operators around town.

Be very careful when buying Gems in Thailand...best to buy it in your home country. Gem scams are prevalent in Thailand.
just google "gem scam" and you'll find alot being written about this. Be wary of people approaching you in touristy areas telling you about government run stores selling discounted gems.

The most reputable store that I know of is Venus Jewelry on Wireless (Witayu) Road across from the entrance to Lumpini Park. Venus will pick you up at your hotel and drop you off. This store has been around for decades and is something of an institution among expats. My sister in law bought sapphires there which were appraised at twice their value in the US. You won't find anything 'cheap' there, but that is because their stuff is real. You can however ask that the price be discounted a bit - nothing in Bangkok is fixed, not even at a place like this.
