Arequipa Suggetions for a 2 day itinerrary in the Colca Canyon
Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 08:52 PM UTC
Hello everyone,

We are planning a 2 day trip to the Colca Canyon at the end of May. Can anyone suggest an itinerary for a 2 day trip from Arequipa? I am not sure if we should stay 2 nights or one night. We like to do this with out a tour. is that possiblle.
Any recommendations on hotels, food, sites would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I suggest you check Oscar's pages aka "euzkadi" and the travel guides for ideas on your Arequipa-Colca Canyon adventure. Goodluck & enjoy beautiful Peru!

I had a lovely tour in 2005 for just 3 persons via the hostel el Indio Dormido in Arequipa: http://www.hostalesenarequipa.com/indio1.html

The hotel was very helpful, found a guide (a local student so your money will go straight back to the locals) & organised places to sleep & eat. We felt that we had a lot for the money we paid & were not part of a tourist 'pack'.

WARNING: this was a budget option staying with inhabitants, not in tourist hotels, very rewarding but not luxury! The trek in the canyon is not for the faint-hearted and involves getting up at 2AM so you can make your way up before sunrise. If this is too much for you, 'softer' options are available.

Check your insurance too as some companies will not cover you for trekking abouve 2,000 metres altitude.

I'm not sure what Pinilus above mean by too risky to do with 'native people' but just to clarify, the hotel uses student who are proper guides (our guide was an archeology student) and I have never felt unsafe staying at a family micro-hostal and travelling on local bus (as part of the Colca trip, the hotel owner put us in the right bus and our host picked us up at the other end on the way out and we came back with our guide on the way back).
