| Barcelona | Typical breakfast! Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 09:41 AM UTC
Hi you all Barca residents and experts!
I've serched the tips and forums, but did not find the exact answer to my question. I have my trip to Barcelona set up for second half of may. First time in town for me. I have an hotel near Plaza Catalunya without breakfast included. Well, not that i do not appreciate the huge buffet breakfasts, but having to pay for that gives you the boost to go out and search for something "normal". I'm italian, so used to Cappuccino + brioche breakfasts, so i'm NOT searching for english breakfast. I would just like to know what is a typical breakfast in Barca and if there is a good bar / pastry shop to recomend near the place where i will stay. Thank you all! Francesco |

ciao Francesco
typical breakfast in Spain is quite similar than in Italy, so you'll be fine :) You'll find plenty of "granjas" (cafes) around where you have a "café con leche" and a "pasta" (that word here means a croissant, brioche, cream or chocolate filled pastries, etc) or a toast or small "bocadillo" Really local.... would be having some "xocoloata amb melindros" (tick, hot chocolate with soft cookies) even this may be more typical at afternoon ("merienda") than for breakfast. The most typical places for that are at Carrer de Petritxol And... now my own pet peeve: better don't call this city "barca" unless you like to be seen like a clueless tourist ;)

Tips to have italian stile breakfast:
Coffe tastes very good at Bracaf´e- places. Buy your brioche or similar at a bakery and order your coffee in a Bar. For special thing I recommend you Forn Boix at carrer Xucl`a. Why don't you try the sane version? A sort of bruschetta instead of sweets will keep you fit during your journey! Catalans like to eat roasted bread whith tomatoe and garlic whith olive oil. This is already tasty and most sane alone, but can be topped whith ham, cheese and others. Don't miss the Boquer´ia market to try typical olives, hams, cheeses and other! If you try patatas bravas, go to La Ginesta at carrer Joaquim Costa (see my tip about) and order it only whith the red sauce (delicious, made whith hazelnuts and peppers). Barca is not the correct name for the city, but some call it Barna. In Albanian it means medicament :-)

Hehehe, Barna, the pharmacy-city LOL
"pa amb tomaquet" (toasted bread with tomato, olive oil...) with ham or cheese, or some patatas bravas, olives, etc.... even with a beer or a cup of wine, may be a typical Catalan late-breakfast on a festive day, or a "second" breakfast at late morning, more a pre-dinner thing. But not first thing on the morning on a working day, at least for mos of us locals ;)
