Brisbane is Australias third largest city and has a diverse population of around 1.8million.
A couple of hours drive to the north of Brisbane is the area known as the Sunshine Coast and this is extremely popular with holidaymakers. Noosa, Mooloolabah and Caloundra are all lovely coastal towns with excellent beaches, restaurants and shopping. An hour south of Brisbane is the vibrant Gold Coast and this is where theme parks such as Dreamworld and Seaworld are located. You can spend the whole day at any of these. If the weather is warm enough for swimming, Wet and Wild water park is great fun as well.

Also the hinterland for both the gold and sunshine coasts are well worth a visit. There are many villages that are very picturesque, wonderful views, great wineries, restaurants etc.

I agree that you should explore the hinterland of the Sunshine and Gold Coasts as well as the more famous coastal areas. The roads are easy to get around on, the signage is good, you shouldn't have any problems.

I agree with the other replies about the Sunshine and Gold Coasts as well as their hinterlands. My favourite place in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is Maleny and Montville. Very quaint and relaxing.
However I am putting a vote in for some more authentic rural Australian experience. Toowoomba is about 1.5 hours west of Brisbane on the Warrego highway and is a pretty big town by Australian standards with a fair bit to see. Also only an hour further west is Dalby and it is a great rural town with a bit of an 'out west' feel. Within another 3 hours you REALLY are west once you hit Roma. Roma can be done for a weekend and it is really worth seeing but you will be doing a lot of driving and it is extremely different to city life. We are talking bore water and dirt streets in town. Mind you June is a good time to visit. It is above 40 degrees celsius for most of the summer. The changing scenery on the way out is awesome. Heading to the south along the Cunningham and New England Highways you have several towns Warwick (1.5 hours from Brisbane) and Stanthorpe/Granite Belt (2.5hours from Brisbane) and just over the border into New South Wales is Tenterfield (3hrs from Brisbane). All of these places have great tourist attractions mainly focussing on wineries and the cold weather! Very different from Brisbane and easily done in a weekend. Try googling them. Have a great trip whatever you do.
