Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Avignon Festival Performances
Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 10:56 PM UTC
Hi, I am will be in Avignon on July 4th & 5th during the start of Avignon Festival. I am trying to book a performance for one of the nights but am absolutely clueless as to what the performances are about (tried googling but didn't seem to get much info) leading me t 2 questions:

1) Are the performances really good across the board? ie; eventhough I don't understand French, is it worth watching something just for the experience?

2) Below are the programmes on July 4th & 5th. If anyone knows any of it or can provide any insight as to what they are about (even translation of the words!) are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

The programme is not strong on explanations...

1) just says in Russian
2) just says Theatre -created 2008
3) just says Installation -created 2008
4) just says Installation + circus (don't ask me...)
5) just says Theatre by Paul Claudel
6) just says Theatre-video
7) just says Theatre (inspired from the Divine Comedy)

A lot of it sounds like a lot of old toot to me, especially the visual art bit. So much of this "contemporary conceptual art" that tries so desperately hard to pass itself off as a novel concept these days is just a poor rehash of what Duchamp, Picabia and co (and the Dadaists) did almost a century ago...

There's an English version:
http://www.festival-avignon.com/index.php?lg=en

All of the shows on these dates are either theatre or theatre/video (with French subtitles) and two exhibitions (Installation).
I think only the dance shows (none on 4-5 July) would've been your best chance.

Next time, try one of the other Avignon festivals:

I experienced the Musique festival once. Not only concerts but also lots of free music in bars, on the streets, well into the night.
