Szia,

I was wondering if anyone knows of VERY VERY VERY cheap hostels (don't have to be of great quality) that accepts dogs.

I would like it to be easy to get to from the airport, but apart from that the only thing I care about is a CHEAP price and that it accepts animals.

Is it easy to find rooms in 1 or 2 star hostels that accept dogs. I see plenty of 3 star plus places that do, but these are too pricey for me.

How much is the average price for the cheapest of the cheap hostels in Budapest (double room)?

Can you take dogs in taxi's, trains, trams, buses, metro?

Any help welcome on any of the above points.

Transportation: it's allowed to bring dogs on all public transportation in Budapest (www.bkv.hu). However; you need a... I don't know the name... thing to prevent a dog from biting. One dog needs one adult ticket (they are cheap though). There are public buses from the airport to the nearest Metro stop. It's rather cumbersome. There are also Minibuses doing fixed route to the centre, and there are the ones who take you to any adress (still cheaper than taxi, several passengers together).

Make sure to check the location / map, as some hostels are far from the centre!

I'm not sure about whether they accept dogs, just ask them! It's been some time since my last stay at hostel in B.pest, but I don't think I paid more than 3,000 HUF.

On the train web site I saw something about only one dog per train can be permitted. I have two dogs. If I put one in a bag/box/carrier can I take 2? Is this rule strict or do they mean per carriage or per person? I can imagine more than one person may want to go with a dog at a time. If it is per person that's no problem as we are 2 humans and two dogs.

Will a taxi driver mind dogs or the buses?

Szia again! It probably depends on the driver. I've definetly experienced lots of dogs on Hungarian buses, so this isn't an absolute rule. If you're able to buy the bus tickets in advance (i.e. if there's a newspaper stand at Ferihegy selling them, I'm not sure about that), then you may enter the rear end of the bus in which case the driver won't bother. (You validate the ticket inside the bus).

If everything else fails: Don't panic :) There is a regular airport taxi service that you may use (however; they are half-bandits as elsewhere in the world.) In case of problems with the dogs I suggest you phone for a regular cab: I recommend Budataxi (2 333 333) or Fõtaxi (2 222 222). However the other regular taxicompanies should be OK (Citytaxi, Tele5 Taxi and Taxi 2000).

Hungarians generally love dogs, but many people keep them as house guards due to thefts. Therefore many are trained to bark, and in the countryside the silence is broken buy rounds after rounds of these dogs barking at each other, the moon, a car or nobody knows. But at a whole they really do love dogs. Unfortunately they are not good at picking up dog crap, so in parks: mind your step!

Dog = kutya (pronounced 'cocha' (almost)).

Yes dog is one of the first words I have already learnt in Hungarian :) I like the word.

My only worry about getting on transport without making sure it's OK is that someone complains or the ticket collectors come and make me pay a fine :(

I'm sure airport taxi drivers would be very willing to take advantage of foreigners with dogs :( I even think the normal taxi's would. They would in Spain anyway. Don't suppose anyone knows how much a taxi from the airport to the centre roughly costs? Then I would have a better idea if they are "taking me for a ride" or not.

This is the official airport taxi, and they accept dogs at a "special rate". City centre is zone 2, some areas zone 3.

Thanks, but even without the dogs I think 16 euros is FAR FAR past my budget :(
