| Prague | Using credit cards in Prague? Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 09:50 PM UTC
Hello. I'm going to Prague for 5-6 days in the beginning of june.
Do many shops and restaurants accept credit cards and is it safe? I'm afraid of getting ripped. (I have both Visa and Mastercard) I've used creditcards in both London and with no problems. I also have another question: How well do the czech (the ones from Prague) speak english or german? |

Credit cards were accepted in all the shops, restaurants and some of the bars that I have been to in Prague, even some of the market stalls. No chip and pin system there - the old fashioned sign the receipt. Is it safe? As safe as anywhere else I guess.
English is widely spoken in the centre of Prague. Absolutely every shop, bar, restaurant, tourist site will have someone who speaks English. Ouside the tourist areas it was a little more difficult but never impossible to be understood.

Recent developments within the banking industry, has seen an increasing amount of travellers having their credit/debit cards stopped whilst on holiday.
The banks computer system sees money being spent abroad as odd or a possible fraud. The banks are after all, looking after you and your money. Please ensure you inform your bank before you leave, that you are going away and to which part of the world you will be using your cards. Some travellers were left without access to their money for 5 days.

language difficulties - none. In the few places where not everyone speaks English, there seems to be a dedicated English-fluent individual immediately available ( and often Indian ).
Ricky52 is most correct about giving your bank information as to your trip in detail. Get the name of the person you speak to and a number if possible. And especially for debit cards make sure there is not a maximum daily charge so you don't exceed it.

Just back from Prague last week. No problems with English - everyone involved in the tourist industry seems to have a good command of the language. We used our credit card in stores there with no problem.
