Barcelona Sant Joan Festival
Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 07:05 PM UTC
Hi:

My husband and I will be in Barcelona from June 20 to the 26. I would like to know which are the best places to experience the celebrations for Sant Joan's night. We are intersted in the traditional celebrations. I understand that there are many activities at the beach, but I don't think that's where the locals go. Will the locals give me some tips?

Yes, believe or not, most locals go to the beach ;)

As the main activity is trowing fireworks, beaches are the only areas you can do it "safely"

In most other parts of the city you will not hardly notice its Sant Joan apart from the odd firework or street bonfire

The seaside cames totally crazy, so better you're not scared of fireworks. I used to go to see the "correfoc" at the Barceloneta main square, and later follow the crowd to to the beaches, stopping where we liked the music (there are a few streets concerts) and walk along the seafront until the "quieter" most distant beaches and have there a few drinks

Last years we decided to go to rent an apartment in a quieter town for this date as we get a bit tired of all this, but I guess it keeps being the same.

Thanks Balseita:

So do you think it's a good idea to make a reservation for dinner in the Barceloneta area, and then follow the crowd?

We locals tend to have dinner quite late, so what we did was having a picnic on the beach after the correfoc (I may be wrong, but I remember this being around 9 or 10 PM). The correfoc is the only really "traditional" part of the festival, so you shoudl not miss it. Maybe you can have dinner before, but be aware it will be nearly impossible to reach the small square if you don't arrive about 1 hour in advance

The restaurants on this area will be crowded so reservation will be needed. I can't give you any specific recommendation indeed.
