Melbourne Airport to city centre-Skybus
Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 06:23 PM UTC
At $16 this seems quite expensive for a 20 minute journey to the city centre.I am travelling solo and wondered if there is a nearby station to the airport I can get to to make use of a Metlink daily pass ($6.50)which seems excellent value. Can anyone help?

I have just made a journey search on the metlink website:

http://jp.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/metlink/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2

You would have to change several times to get from the airport to the city - and even more if you do not only want to end up at Flinders St Railway Station. The trip takes up to 1 h.

The Skybus service includes free transportation from their city depot to your accommodation. To be fair, this will also take a long time as they have to drop off quite a lot of people. But, of course, it is more convenient as you do not have to carry your luggage at all, and depending on how heavy your luggage is you will appreciate this a lot.

Airports in Australia really shock the pocketbook of tourists. Even in Sydney an airport train ride is one-way up to $14.40. Ridiculous.

If I remember correctly, the Sky Bus in Melbourne isn't too bad an option if you up-front buy the round-trip option. Maybe it's $24??? Not too bad in the end for zero stops to the city centre.

Have fun!

You can take the Tullamarine Bus Lines bus from melb airport to Moonee Ponds - see http://www.tullamarinebus.com.au/ and from there catch a tram to the city (Elizabeth Street). All travel would be on the metlink card. Time would be at least an hour to city from airport.

Although more expensive, the Skybus would certainly be quicker at about 20 minutes.

Unfortunately Tullamarine isnt like Heathrow, unless you want to get a cab for $50 then the Skybus really is the best option.. They are quick and efficient and as previously mentioned, they will drop you at your accomodation.

Hi,
This airport does *NOT* have any rail link.
I know - it is 2008 and it seems hard to believe - but there it is!

$16.00 for *ANY* fare in Australia is a pretty cheap deal.

A taxi could cost anywhere from $45.00 to over $100.00 depending on the normal Melbourne road gridlock situation, welcome to Aus - have a nice day!!

I don't think Tulla will ever have a rail link to the CBD - its just not economically viable. There's been several proposals and all have said the same thing - forget the idea, it won't pay for itself. Sydney airport to city rail link has been loosing money since it opened and that is a far busier airport than Melb.
