Hi,

I'm driving from Perth to Darwin in September, over 25 days (a tourist trip). I need to know whether i should hire a 4wd or whether i will be fine with a 2wd vehicle - can anyone help?

I know i can (physically) do the drive in a 2wd, but will i be missing out on all the "best" sights if i lack an off-road capability?

Unless you are extremely experienced in outback driving I would stick to major highways and therefore a 2WD is all you need.

Make sure you know exactly what you are in for before deciding to venture into the Australian Outback.

I only drove from Perth to Derby but was happy to have a 4x4. If you stick to the paved roads only you will not be able to explore all the national parks (for example Karijini, Tom Price, Hamersley Gorge, Kalbarri etc.) along the road. The places we enjoyed most on this trip were all for 4x4.
